The Innocence Mission – Birds of My Neighbourhood
By Andrew Dolton

It’s currently 2006 and this album originally came out in 1999. Even if you take into consideration differing levels of interest on either side of the Atlantic it seems very strange. Add into the equation that original copies are changing hands for $60+ on Ebay and it becomes more of a curious matter. One thing that might explain the release is the current popularity of one of their biggest fans, namely Sufjan Stevens. Much like his music this is lovely, fragile folk music par excellence. A song as beautiful as ‘The Lakes of Canada’ is a case in point. There is no need to overfill and make songs all big and bombastic. Here is lyrical genius to use words sparingly to get the idea across accompanying thought inducing melodies from the strum of the acoustic guitar. Just lovely.
