Innocence Mission offer soothing lullabies on 'Day'

If the Innocence Mission's songs are a sweet confection, then Karen Peris' voice is the creamy filling. Along with her husband Don and bassist Mike Bitts, the group has been quietly producing some of the best indie-acoustic music for the last 15 years.

The formula isn't complicated. Don and Bitts create clean, simple melodies over which Karen soothes the listener with her beautiful, silky tone. The result is an ethereal mix of crisp pop music with light-hearted lyrics. Mission's latest offering, Now the Day is Over, is a collection of classic songs done in their unique style. The selections are some of Karen's favorites to sing to her children as lullabies, which makes it feel as if she's playing mother throughout. Here, fans will find easily-recognizable classics like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz, Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music. Also included on Day are acoustic arrangements of Beethoven's "Prelude in A" and Chopin's "Sonata No. 8.  And "My Love Goes With You," a Karen original, fits right in with the lullaby atmosphere.  The album ends with two hymns, "It is Well With my Soul" and "Now the Day is Over." This isn't the first time Mission has ventured into the spiritual side of music, as 2000's Christ is my Hope was a collection of reworked hymns. On the heels of the group's last record of original songs, 2003's Befriended, this new album provides a different, more- personal look at Mission. It's almost like sitting in the Perises' living room on a summer evening as a part of their family. Die-hard fans will enjoy Day, but this isn't the best way to introduce the group to a newcomer. It doesn't have the poppy bounce of albums like Umbrella or Birds of my Neighborhood, and it's not supposed to. Rather, Now the Day is Over does just what the band probably intended - send you off to a relaxing dreamscape.
